Nessebar: A UNESCO Treasure in the Heart of Bulgaria.

Nessebar.Just the name itself already transports you to a world apart, between sky, sea, and millennia of history. And bars, because let’s be honest, the name makes you want to explore its nightlife.
A small Bulgarian town located on the Black Sea coast., Nessebar is a destination where past and present coexist harmoniously. In just a few steps, you travel through centuries, discover architectural treasures, and enjoy idyllic nature.

Personally, it’s one of my favorite places in Bulgaria. Not necessarily for a vacation stay (I’ll tell you more about that later). But mainly for visiting, exploring, and admiring.
Here’s why you should absolutely visit it and everything you shouldn't miss in this charming historic spot.
Where is Nessebar and how to get there
If you’ve already arrived at the Black Sea coast., congratulations. The hardest part is done. If not, fly to one of the nearest airports Sofia, Varna or BurgasOr even Bucharest, passing through Ruse).
Nessebar is located about 35km from Burgas. You can rely on public transport to get there. Buses run every 30 minutes from the central station to the old or new town of Nessebar. The price of a ticket in 2024 is 8 BGN (4 Euros).The journey takes about 45 minutes. You can also take a taxi,but be prepared for slightly higher prices.
Once there, the best way to get around the old town is on foot,especially since cars are banned in the old town. The narrow cobbled streets aren’t suitable for bikes, and walking is the best way to enjoy Nessebar’s unique atmosphere anyway.

The history of Nessebar: a journey through the centuries
Nessebar, one of Europe’s oldest cities, has a fascinating history that dates back more than 3,000 years.It was originally founded by the Thracians under the name Melsambriabefore being colonized by the Greeks around the 6th century BC. The Greeks transformed this small settlement into an important seaport, building temples, theaters, and fortifications. In ancient times, the city thrived due to its prosperous trade and strategic location on the Black Sea. The Thracians named the city Melsambria in honor of their legendary leader, Melsa. Over time, its name evolved, becoming Messemvria in the Middle Ages, then Messebar, and finally Nessebar.
Over the centuries, Nessebar changed hands several times, passing under Roman, Byzantine, Bulgarian, and Ottoman rule. Each of these civilizations left its mark, which can still be admired in the city’s architectural remains. The Byzantine churches,in particular, are treasures that testify to this rich history. Nessebar has preserved its unique character throughout the ages, and it’s this cultural diversity that makes it such a special city today.
The most impressive aspect of Nessebar’s history is its ability to be reborn in every era. Listed as aUNESCO World Heritage site in 1983, the old town of Nessebar is a true historical gem where every stone has a story to tell.
The old town and the new town
Today, Nessebar is divided into two distinct parts: the old town and the new town. Theold town is located on a small peninsula connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus. This is where you’ll find the historical treasures, cobblestone streets, and millennia-old churches that attract so many visitors. The architecture is typically Bulgarian, with wooden houses dating from the Bulgarian Renaissance.Walking through the old town feels like travelling light back in time, surrounded by remnants of the past.
The old town of Nessebar is quite small, only 850 meters long and 350 meters wide. Over time, about a third of the ancient city has been swallowed by the sea. If you enjoy diving, you can still see pieces of its walls underwater, about 80 meters from the coast. In ancient times, Messemvria had two ports, to the south and west, where remnants and tools from old ships can still be found.
Only the western part of the city wall, with its gate, has survived to this day. It was used to defend Nessebar from land attacks.

On the other hand, the new town is much more modern. It developed to accommodate the growing population and tourists. Here, you’ll find hotels, restaurants, and shops, offering an interesting contrast to the historic atmosphere of the old town. The new town is where the residents of Nessebar live and work daily, while staying connected to their past through the old town right next door.
These two parts create the perfect combination for a stay in Nessebar. You can stroll through the old town in the morning, exploring its historical sites, and then enjoy a seaside lunch in the new town. This unique blend of past and present makes Nessebar so captivating and continues to fascinate visitors year after year. Although I personally wouldn’t spend a “real” vacation in Nessebar, it’s a favorite spot for many locals and tourists.
Must-see places in Nessebar, Bulgaria: culture and architecture
If you only have one day to explore Nessebar, I recommend spending your time in the old town. While the new town is lively, it lacks points of interest or historical monuments. Everything is in the ancient town.
The churches of Nessebar
Nessebar is called “the city of forty churches,” though many have disappeared over the centuries. But the ones that remain are true gems of religious architecture.
- Saint Stephen’s Church: Built in the 11th century, this church is one of the best-preserved in Nessebar. Its interior is covered with magnificent frescoes depicting biblical scenes.
- Church of Christ Pantocrator: One of the most beautiful churches in the city, with its alternating red and white bricks, typical of Byzantine architecture.
- Saint Sophia Church: The oldest in Nessebar and a perfect example of Paleo-Christian architecture. Though partially in ruins, it remains impressive.

The archaeological museum of Nessebar
For those who want to deepen their knowledge of local history, the Archaeological Museum is a must-visit. It traces the history of the city from the Thracian period to the Byzantine era. You’ll find an incredible collection of ancient artifacts, including coins, ceramics, and religious icons. The exhibit is well-organized and helps you understand the city's evolution through the centuries.
The old town walls
The walls of Nessebar surround the old town and attest to the strategic importance of the city throughout the centuries. These walls, dating back to the Byzantine era, have been partially restored and offer a spectacular view of the Black Sea. A walk along these fortifications will give you a glimpse of Nessebar’s past grandeur.
The wooden houses
As you wander through Nessebar’s narrow cobblestone streets, you’ll notice the charming wooden houses of the old town. These houses mostly date back to the 18th and 19th centuries and showcase traditional Bulgarian architecture. Their picturesque appearance gives the town a warm and intimate ambiance, perfect for a leisurely stroll.

The beaches of Nessebar
After exploring Nessebar's rich history, nothing beats lying on a beach to relax. Nessebar offers several beaches where you can unwind and admire the Black Sea. Personally, I don’t particularly enjoy Nessebar’s beaches because they tend to be noisy and quite popular. But to each their own.
- South Beach of Nessebar: The largest and most popular beach. It's ideal for families, with its shallow waters and many amenities.
- North Beach: Less crowded than South Beach, it’s a perfect spot for those seeking a bit more tranquility.
- Sunny Beach: Located near Nessebar, this beach is one of the most famous in BulgariaIf you enjoy water sports or are looking for a more festive atmosphere, this is the place to go. Just know that Sunny Beach is quite “built-up,” with hotels, bars, and restaurants everywhere. It’s about 3km from the old town, accessible by foot, bus, or a small tourist train.
Gastronomy: what and where to eat in Nessebar
Discovering a city also means tasting its culinary specialties. Nessebar is no exception! You’ll find numerous restaurants with spectacular views of the sea. I recommend taking a stroll through the town before choosing your favorite spot, as you’ll likely be tempted to try the restaurants in the center. But don’t rush. The gems are located at the far end of the old town, by the sea. My favorite restaurant is Zornitzabut there are many others worth visiting.
Being a coastal town, Nessebar naturally offers seafood and fish dishes. You’ll find many restaurants serving grilled fish, mussels, calamari, and freshly caught shrimp. Pair it with a glass of Bulgarian wine for the perfect meal.
Don’t miss trying some local specialties like "snezhanka" salad,a cucumber and yogurt salad, or shopska salatamade with tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, onions, white cheese, and olive oil. In short, we love salads in Bulgaria. Bulgaria.

A bit of shopping?
Nessebar est un lieu idéal pour trouver des souvenirs authentiques. De nombreuses petites boutiques vendent des produits locaux comme des poteries, des icônes religieuses, des objets artisanaux et des bijoux. Si vous aimez rapporter un petit morceau de culture chez vous, c’est ici qu’il faut faire vos emplettes.
When to visit Nessebar in Bulgaria
Nessebar also offers plenty of opportunities for shopping, especially if you're looking for souvenirs to bring home. You'll find small shops throughout the old town selling handmade jewelry, ceramics, and traditional Bulgarian crafts. While some may be a bit touristy, you can still find authentic items. I suggest taking your time and exploring the narrow streets, as some of the best shops are hidden away.
If you are already in Nessebar, don't forget to visit Sozopol. You will not be disappointed!
Why you must visit Nessebar in Bulgaria
Nessebar, I love it, even though it’s a bit too touristy for my taste. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it for a long stay. There are few real beaches, and the heat can be overwhelming due to the lack of shade. But be careful, it’s a city you absolutely must see! Its historical beauty is unmatched.
