visiter Bourgas Bulgarie
Welcome to my second home city in Bulgaria (after Ruse of course). Located on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast., Burgas (Бургас) has long been my adopted city, at least for the summer months. My family worked in tourism, and I had the pleasure of exploring the nooks and crannies of Bulgaria’s 4th largest city. Since leaving my country, this is where my home base is located.

Burgas is a captivating city that combines historical richness, natural beauty, and a vibrant atmosphere. Less known than its neighbour Varna, Burgas is definitely worth visiting for its many attractions and laid-back ambiance. It is also an excellent starting point for exploring the small seaside towns along the southern coast.
How to Get to Burgas, Bulgaria
As with every Bulgarian city I mention, I suggest you first locate it on the map. Burgas is situated on the southern side of the Black Sea, in the "Burgas Bay."This strategic position has greatly contributed to the city’s development. You can reach it by plane since the city has its own airport, or you can arrive in Sofia and travel across the country by car, bus, or train to get to Burgas. The distance from Sofia is around 450 km. I can only recommend taking a bus, as my recent experiences with trains were not very positive. However, travelling by train in Bulgaria is an adventure, so if you’re feeling adventurous, go for it!
A bit of history
The origins of Burgas date back to ancient times. Archaeological excavations have revealed remains of Thracian, Greek, and Roman settlements, highlighting the region's importance over millennia. However, the city as we know it today took shape in the late 19th century with the rise of trade and maritime exchanges.
Burgas was under the rule of the Ottomans for several centuries, leaving a lasting imprint on its architecture and culture. During this period, the city became an important commercial center, thanks to its strategic port on the Black Sea coast.Unfortunately, due to numerous conflicts in the region, little of its historical architecture has been preserved.
After Bulgaria's liberation from Ottoman rule in 1878,Burgas continued to grow and modernize. Today, it is a dynamic city with a thriving economy, centred around trade, tourism, and the petrochemical industry.
