Traveling Light: Secrets for a Stress-Free Journey

Voyager leger

If there's one thing I dislike, something I deeply hate, it's waiting. If you ask my friends for a word that describes me (besides nice, funny, smart, beautiful, and magnificent, of course), they’ll probably say I’m impatient. And punctual. I’m never late (at least as long as it depends on me). And I don't like being slow. This is probably one of the main reasons all my travels are done with just a backpack, preferably without checked luggage. But it wasn’t always that way. When I was younger, even as a young adult, I always had large suitcases that took up half the space in hotel rooms or public transport.

Fortunately, little by little, I learned to travelling light light, and I’ll never go back. In this article, I’ll do my best to share with you how I got here and my tips for travelling light.

My First Steps as a Traveler

Voyager léger

My love for travel likely comes from how I spent my early years. With a Russian mother and a Bulgarian father, I spent a lot of time traveling between the two countries. Generally, we spent 3 months a year in Russia and 9 in Bulgaria in Ruse. Travelling with four people for three months wasn’t easy, especially when two of us were young children. We travelled by train and weren’t really limited in terms of luggage. My mother would bring almost half of our belongings for the three-month trip. So, I learned not to be shocked by travelling with ten bags.

When I arrived in France in 2006, I had two large suitcases with me. It makes sense since I was starting a new life. Looking back, I’m almost sure that most of my travels in my twenties were done with suitcases. I remember going to Milan for a general assembly with a 15 kg suitcase for four days. And it wasn’t the weight that was annoying, but running through public transport with a wheeled suitcase. That’s when I decided to change my travel style.

The Backpack and Me

In 2017, I started exploring travel without flying.Along with my future business partner Marina and our significant others, we set out to explore Slovakia. The plan was simple: travel by train (with 4 to 5 connections from Strasbourg), explore, hike, and then return. For this two-week journey, I finally decided to invest in a 40+10 liter backpack to travel freely. I don't regret this decision because even seven years later, this backpack remains my faithful companion on long trips.

However, what I do regret is bringing a 50-liter backpack for just two weeks! Picture me climbing the Low Tatras, burdened with a backpack full of unnecessary items: 10 t-shirts, 3 dresses, 2 books… It was like I had decided to carry my house on my back, like an overly determined turtle!

We learned while making mistakes. That's why in 2019, when I started my 3 months trip on the Transsiberian train, I took the same backpack. 50 lt for 3 months, it's not that much, right? Wrong. After one month and a half of travel, I had to send a few kilos of stuff back to France. My 3 shirts worn only twice and the 4 tshirts that I never got to wear took on a long journey by train before being sent back in a package from Vladivostok.

Why Do We Overpack?

So, what goes on in our heads when we pack? Why do we tend to bring far too many things? It's like our brain plays a giant game of Tetris with our clothes. We think: "Maybe I’ll need this dress for a fancy beach party… Oh, and this flashlight, just in case I end up in a cave." Before we know it, we’re stuffing a toaster into our backpack. Or a hair straightener and an iron, just to look presentable.

Unfortunately, there's no one-size-fits-all packing strategy, but I can still give you some tried-and-true tips on how to pack for optimal results.

If your trip involves hiking, don’t hesitate to wear your heavy shoes and pack your lighter ones. Or hang them on your bag if possible. Sure, your feet will be warm, but you’ll save space in your bags. I also recommend packing a small backpack (ideally foldable) for your daily activities during your trip.

Some Practical Tips

Choose the Right Bag

The choice of bag is crucial! Opt for a bag that suits the length and type of travel you're embarking on. A well-sized, lightweight, and functional bag will allow you to carry everything you need without weighing you down unnecessarily. With the right bag, you're ready for new adventures with ease!

To travel as light as a feather, preparation is key! Creating a list of essentials before your trip will help you avoid packing unnecessary items. Stick to the basics and leave the extra stuff behind. With a well-prepared list, you can pack light and embark on your adventure with a clear mind!

And if you don’t feel like making a list, you can always use the one available in my travel guidebook,, which is offered to everyone who organizes their trip with me.

The golden rule is to prioritize the essentials. Ask yourself: what do I really need for this trip? By making conscious choices and only taking what’s necessary, you’ll avoid being weighed down by unnecessary items. Choose simplicity and enjoy a lighter, more pleasant travel experience!

Find out what services your accommodation provides. If they offer toiletries and towels, why burden yourself with your own? By optimizing what you pack based on the amenities available, you can significantly lighten your load and travel more comfortably. A little preparation ahead of time will let you fully enjoy your trip without worrying about carrying unnecessary items.

Consider doing laundry on-site to avoid overpacking and travel light. Many accommodations offer laundry facilities, or you can find laundromats nearby. By planning to wash your clothes regularly during your trip, you can reduce the number of items you bring, allowing you to travel more comfortably and make the most of your experience without being weighed down by a heavy bag.

Anticipate your activities and only pack what you’ll really need. There’s no point in packing a swimsuit if you’re not planning to swim, or a heavy jacket if it’s warm. By assessing your activities in advance, you can avoid overloading your bag with unnecessary items, making your travels easier and more comfortable.

Limit items for downtime, like books and gadgets. Instead of filling your bag with entertainment, take the opportunity to explore your destination and discover new activities. You’ll likely find interesting ways to keep yourself occupied on-site, allowing you to travel lighter and fully immerse yourself in your travel experience.

In general, you can find what you need locally, especially in hotels or nearby supermarkets. Of course, if you have specific needs or favorite products, make sure to bring them. However, for most basic needs, it’s often more convenient and lighter to get these items at your destination.

Opt for compression bags. These bags allow you to reduce the volume of your clothes by compressing them, helping you save space in your backpack or suitcase. It’s a practical and effective solution to maximize available space and minimize bulk during your trip.

Adopt the “three less” rule for traveling light. Once your bag is packed, take a moment to remove at least three items you’ve thrown in “just in case.” Let’s be honest—do you really need that third pair of shoes or that heavy novel? Free yourself from the excess and lighten your load for a more enjoyable, stress-free trip!

Practice Makes Perfect

I’ve talked a lot about my failures as a traveller when it comes to packing. But I must say I’ve learned from my mistakes. In the fall of 2019, I set off for a month in Great Britain, from Scotland to Wales through England. The plan included hiking and city visits. For this grand month-long experience, I had only a 20-liter backpack. And I survived!

Traveling with a backpack might seem intimidating at first, but once you master the art of traveling light, you open yourself to a world of possibilities and freedom. By carefully choosing what you bring, staying organized, and being ready to make a few compromises, you'll find that travelling with a backpack can be a rewarding experience. Let yourself be guided by adventure and the excitement of the unknown, and always remember that the most important thing is to enjoy the journey, no matter what's in your backpack.
