How to reach Rila Monastery?

- By car: If you’re driving, the trip from Sofia takes about two hours. Just follow the E79 highway towards Blagoevgrad, then take the secondary road leading to the monastery. The journey offers stunning mountainous landscapes.
- By bus: Several daily buses depart from Sofia and go directly to the monastery. You can catch them at the central bus station. The trip takes about three hours and costs around 12 to 15 levs (6 to 7 euros).

Hrelja Tower: Built in 1335, Hrelja Tower is the oldest part of the monastery still standing. It once served as a refuge in case of attack. You can climb to the top of the tower for a panoramic view of the monastery and the surrounding mountains.
The monks' cells: The monastery is still home to a small community of monks today. Their cells are arranged around the inner courtyard, and although most are closed to the public, they add to the feeling of tranquility and devotion that permeates the place.
What to see at Rila Monastery
The monastery museum: The Rila Monastery Museum houses a collection of religious objects, ancient manuscripts, and treasures that trace the history of the site. One of the most impressive items is the Rafail’s Cross, a hand-carved wooden cross featuring more than 100 detailed biblical scenes.
The church frescoes: The interior of the church is completely covered in magnificent frescoes. Each wall tells a different story, from Genesis to the Resurrection, and the intricate details will keep you captivated.
Saint John of Rila’s cave: Located about 4 km from the monastery, the cave where Saint John of Rila lived is another point of interest for visitors. You can reach it via a short hike, and many people come to pray or meditate there in peace.
Hrelja Tower was a discovery for me during my last visit in 2024. For only 5 BGN, you can explore this impressive 14th-century relic. Once you climb the narrow stairs to the top, you’re rewarded with a spectacular view of the surrounding mountains. It’s a place that makes you feel the strength of history while offering a perspective on the natural beauty of the area. If you love historic sites and breathtaking views, this visit is well worth the detour.
Practical tips for your visit
Best time to visit:The monastery is open year-round, but the best time to visit is from May to September when the weather is mild and the surrounding mountains are lush. Also, try to visit early, especially in summer. Around 11:30 am, many tourist buses arrive, so it's best to get there as early as possible.
Dress appropriately: As this is a religious site, it's important to dress modestly. Avoid shorts, tank tops, and make sure to cover your shoulders and legs. The last time I visited the Monastery, it was in the summer of 2024. One of the people with me was wearing shorts. When we entered the Monastery, a monk gave them a scarf to cover up. But they were lucky, as several people were refused entry because of their attire. So be mindful.
Bring cash: Admission to the monastery is free, but certain sections, like Hrelja Tower and the museum, charge a small entrance fee. Be sure to bring local currency (levs) to cover these costs.
