Journey's End: Why Returning Home Is an Emotional Challenge.
les blues de fin de voyage
Every time I plan a trip, I get super excited. I can’t wait to discover new (or even familiar) places, meet people, and taste the local cuisine. The excitement of the unknown is everywhere. I’m also curious to see how my friends and my town will change during my absence. But in reality, nothing changes. Not really, anyway. People and places stay the same. The only thing that changes is me. I come back with new impressions, new stories, new ideas. Thanks to the trip, I’m a different person, at least for a few days. I always return with plans and ideas for change that rarely happen. Because once I'm back, routine takes over, and life goes on.
That’s why I always want to leave again. I want to keep that spark and excitement alive.

Understanding Post-Trip Blues
The return to reality is even more brutal when I travel alone.Coming home, I can’t really express how I feel to anyone. Of course, my loved ones will listen, react, and ask questions. But no one lived what I did. They can’t always understand why I feel down after returning home. Just as I can’t fully grasp what they experience when they travel without me.
Initially, we’re happy to return home after a trip. Sleeping in our bed, taking a shower, seeing our cat... It’s always nice. But little by little, that excitement fades. We start to feel down. We’ve got the post-trip blues.
Coming home feels like a mundane ending to a life-changing experience. Even after a short trip, we’re not the same anymore. And I’m not just talking about the bank account that suffered from our adventures.
We return with new ideas and experiences. And after that, we’re back to our couch, bedroom, and office.
After a while, friends don’t want to hear our travel stories anymore. They wonder if we’re unhappy to be back with them.
That’s not the case. It’s just that the return to reality is a bit harsh. Yesterday I was sipping Guinness in the Scottish Highlands, today I’m sitting at my desk, staring at an Excel file. The feeling of never really escaping the routine creeps back. That’s the real blues.
Anyone who has travelling light will understand what I’m talking about.
What Are the Symptoms of Post-Trip Blues?
The "symptoms" vary from person to person, but some common signs include:
- A sense of sadness or emptiness
- Difficulty concentrating
- Lack of motivation
- Loss of interest in daily activities
- Feelings of boredom or frustration
- Changes in sleeping patterns
How to Overcome Post-Trip Blues?
Unfortunately, there’s no magic solution to post-trip blues. But you can try different strategies to see what works best for you.
Relive Your Travel Memories
Take the time to sort through your photos and create a travel album about your trip.Add captions, anecdotes, and special memories. If you like writing, keep a travel journal where you can record your experiences and thoughts. This will allow you to relive your adventures whenever you want. For example, when I volunteered with elephants,I kept a journal. At the end of each day, I wrote down my impressions, feelings, and desires—a sort of travel diary. I still look at it from time to time when I want to relive those memories.
You can also share your stories with loved ones, but be careful, it can tire them out quickly. It’s nothing personal; it’s just that no one will fully understand your trip the way you do.
Integrate Elements of Your Trip into Your Daily Life
Bring pieces of your trip into your everyday life to extend the experience and ease the transition.
Recreate dishes you discovered during your trip. Look for recipes online or buy a cookbook from the region you visited. Invite friends over and share your new culinary skills..
Incorporate practices or habits you enjoyed during your trip into your daily routine. For example, if you discovered yoga or meditation during your trip, continue practicing at home.
Add travel souvenirs to your home decor.Hang up photos, postcards, or handmade items you brought back. They’ll remind you of your adventures and bring you joy.
Stay Active and Engage in New Activities
Physical exercise est un excellent moyen de lutter contre le blues de post-voyage. Reprenez une activité sportive is a great way to fight post-trip blues. Get back into a sport you love or try something new. Walking, running, yoga, or swimming can help you feel better physically and mentally.
Learn something new by taking a class or workshop. Whether it’s a language, an instrument, photography, or cooking, learning new skills can bring you satisfaction and fulfillment.
Volunteering is a great way to give your time and skills while making a difference in your community. Even if you can’t do voluntourism at home, you can find local volunteering opportunities. Look for ways to contribute that match your interests and passions.
Stay Connected and Don’t Isolate Yourself
Social connections are key to overcoming post-trip blues. Don’t isolate yourself, and find ways to reconnect with others.
Join travel groups on social media or in your local community. Sharing your experiences with fellow travelers can help you feel understood and inspire new ideas for future trips.
Invite friends and family to regular get-togethers.Whether it’s a dinner, game night, or outing, spending time with loved ones can bring comfort and joy.
If your friends and family are far away, use technology to stay in touch. Video calls, messages, and social media can help maintain strong connections, even from a distance. My family lives in Bulgariain Russia or in Belgium,I am very thankful for technology to be able to contact them.
Accept and Acknowledge Your Emotions
It’s important to recognize and accept your feelings after a trip.
Don’t suppress your emotions. Talk to someone you trust or write in a journal.Expressing your feelings can help you understand and accept them.
Give yourself time to adjust to being back home. It’s normal to feel a bit sad or frustrated after a trip, but those feelings will fade over time.
If you feel overwhelmed by post-trip blues and your symptoms persist, don’t hesitate to seek professional help.Talking to a therapist or counselor can provide extra support and strategies for managing your emotions.
Cultivate New Goals and Projects
Setting new goals and starting new projects can give you a sense of direction and accomplishment.
Identify a passion or interest you’ve always wanted to explore and dedicate time to it. Whether it’s photography, writing, gardening, or music, finding an activity you’re passionate about can be extremely rewarding.
Take on personal projects you’ve put off. Whether it’s renovating your home, starting a business, or writing a book, working on a project can give you purpose and motivation.
Invest in your personal developmentby reading books, taking online courses, or attending workshops. Personal growth can help you thrive in different areas of your life.
Rediscover Your City and Surroundings
Sometimes the feeling of novelty and adventure can be found in your own environment. I've dedicated an article about how to discover your city as a tourist.Don't hesitate to check it out.
Take time to explore places in your city or region that you’ve never visited. This could include parks, museums, cafes, or hiking trails.
Learn about local events and participate in them. Festivals, markets, concerts, and exhibitions can offer new experiences and help you meet new people.
Plan Your Next Trip
Nothing is more exciting than planning a new adventure. Starting to plan your next trip can give you something to look forward to and motivate you.
Research different destinations and choose one that interests you the most. Consider your preferences, budget, and available time.
Set a budget and start saving for your next trip. It will give you a financial goal to work toward and keep you focused.
