"And missing the expiration date on your passport, is that an expert mistake?" That’s what the increasingly sarcastic voice in my head said a few seconds later when I discovered that my passport had expired two weeks ago.

This was the first time I realized that no matter how much of an expert traveller you are, you’re never safe from a mistake.
To help you avoid the same situation, I’ve prepared a list of common mistakes to steer clear of so you don't turn your dream vacation into an administrative nightmare.

Expired passport
There’s nothing quite like showing up at the airport with an expired passport. You’ve prepared everything—suitcase, tickets, toiletries—but that tiny detail? Completely forgotten. Did you know that some countries require your passport to be valid for at least six months after your return date? Yeah, better check before you leave.
Also, verify the specific requirements of each country regarding the validity of your passport or ID. Even if it seems obvious, better to double-check and avoid ending up like my friend Thomas, whom I met in Thailand. He had to rush to the French embassy in Bangkok to renew his passport because he extended his trip. He managed, but with a lot of unnecessary stress.
The same rules can apply to your driver's license. I recently organized a trip to Bulgaria that included renting a car. One of the drivers had an expired heavy vehicle license, and that was flagged. Even though their category B license was still valid, the rental agency refused to accept that driver. Also, ensure that your passport numbers, gender, and date of birth are correct. A common mistake is mixing up digits or selecting the wrong gender on booking forms. Destination error
Booking a flight to the wrong destination can be an expensive and frustrating mistake. Imagine booking a flight to Sydney, Nova Scotia, instead of Sydney, Australia. "A visa? But what for?" Well, to enter certain countries, of course. Always check the visa requirements of the country you’re visiting. Otherwise, you might find yourself stuck at the airport—or worse, having to turn back. Imagine arriving in China without a visa or discovering at the airport that your ESTA for the U.S. hasn’t been approved. Also, don’t forget about transit visas. Some countries, like the U.S., require a visa even if you're just passing through the airport. So be careful and check the requirements of each country on your itinerary, including layovers.

Losing your passport abroad is a nightmare. Having copies of your documents can save you. Make sure to make copies before you leave, both paper and digital versions. Travelling with valuable items can be stressful, especially when passing through customs. Whether it’s jewellery, expensive electronics, or artwork, having documentation proving ownership is crucial. These documents may include receipts, certificates of authenticity, or timestamped photos.

Presenting proof of ownership can smooth the process and avoid awkward questions or delays. Additionally, this can help in case of loss or theft during the trip, making insurance claims easier.
