Love holds an important place in Bulgarian culture. For centuries, local traditions have celebrated couples, marriage, and the little gestures that keep the flame alive. Even on February 14th, Bulgarians celebrate not only Valentine’s Day but also Wine Day, Trifon Zarezan. A double opportunity to toast to love!
Love in Bulgaria: Traditions, Legends and Curiosities
Love in Bulgaria is a story full of ancient traditions, enchanting legends, and sometimes surprising rituals. Between colorful weddings, wine festivals, and mythological tales, Bulgarian culture celebrates feelings with passion. Here’s a journey into the heart of Bulgarian love customs.
Bulgarian Weddings: A True Festival
In Bulgaria, a wedding is not just a simple ceremony. It’s a celebration that, in the past, lasted several days. Of course, nowadays weddings are more modern, but some traditions still persist, especially in villages.
Before the wedding, there’s an essential step: the marriage proposal. In the past, this was done with the help of a matchmaker, a woman from the village who acted as an intermediary between the families. Once the agreement was made, the festivities could begin.
One of the highlights of a traditional Bulgarian wedding is the ritual of bread and salt. At the entrance to the reception hall, the bride and groom must break a special bread together. The one who gets the larger piece is said to become the head of the household. Then, they each dip a piece into salt, a symbol of protection against misfortune.
Dancing is also a central element of Bulgarian weddings. The horo, a circle dance where everyone holds hands, is essential. It symbolizes unity and shared joy. The newlyweds must also dance together to show their connection to the guests.
Another fun tradition: the kidnapping of the bride. A group of friends kidnaps the bride and the groom must negotiate her “release” by offering alcohol, money, or by completing a challenge.
Love Legends in Bulgaria
Bulgaria is full of legends where love triumphs… or ends in tragedy. Some stories have survived the centuries and are still told today.
One of the most famous is that of Orpheus and Eurydice. Orpheus, a legendary musician from the Rhodopes, loses his wife Eurydice, bitten by a snake. Devastated, he descends to the Underworld to retrieve her. Thanks to his enchanting music, he convinces Hades to let her go. But there’s one condition: he must not look back until they’re out. Unfortunately, just before the exit, he glances back… and Eurydice disappears forever.
Another legend tells the story of the Wonder Bridges, an impressive natural site in the Rhodopes. According to tradition, a young shepherd and a mountain fairy loved each other in secret. But the jealous gods transformed the path where they met into stone bridges, separating them forever.
Love and Bulgarian Superstitions
Love is also surrounded by superstitions in Bulgaria. Here are some surprising beliefs:
If a woman steps over a broom, she will remain single for a long time.
If a couple shares a drink with two straws, their love will last.
If a young girl places a piece of bread under her pillow on New Year’s Eve, she will dream of her future husband.
Bulgarians take these beliefs with humor, but they are still part of local folklore.
Trifon Zarezan, the Celebration of Love and Wine
On February 14 in Bulgaria, people don’t just celebrate Valentine’s Day, but also Trifon Zarezan, the winemakers' holiday. This ancient tradition is dedicated to wine and vines, a symbol of fertility and abundance.
In winegrowing villages, men prune the vines as a sign of renewal, before gathering for a great feast where wine flows freely. Bulgarian couples often have a choice between a classic romantic evening and a festive celebration where love and wine blend joyfully.
Why not combine the two? Spend the day visiting a vineyard, take part in a tasting, and end the evening with a candlelight dinner. An original way to celebrate love while soaking up local traditions.

Bansko, Love at the Summit
Bansko is the ideal destination for couples who love mountains and winter sports. Located at the foot of the Pirin mountain range, this ski resort combines wild nature and traditional charm. In winter, the snow-covered slopes offer a magical setting, and in summer, the mountain becomes a perfect playground for romantic hikes.
Start your day with a ski run, then warm up in one of the many taverns in the town. Bansko’s mehanas, these typical restaurants with wooden decor and a cozy atmosphere, are perfect for a romantic dinner. Order a portion of chomlek, a tender stew slowly cooked in pottery, accompanied by a full-bodied red wine.

Melnik is the smallest village in Bulgaria, but it doesn’t lack charm. Nestled in the heart of the southwestern mountains, it charms with its old houses, cobbled streets, and peaceful atmosphere. It’s the perfect place for a romantic stay away from the hustle and bustle of big cities.
What makes Melnik unique is its wine. The region is known for producing one of Bulgaria’s best red wines, Shiroka Melnishka Loza. This local grape produces a powerful wine with intense aromas, perfect for a romantic evening. Many wineries offer tastings, where you can enjoy a glass in an authentic setting, sometimes even inside caves carved into the rock.
For a hand-in-hand walk, head to the spectacular rock formations called the Melnik Pyramids. The trail leading there offers stunning views and an almost unreal atmosphere. At the end of the day, sit in a traditional tavern and indulge in delicious local cuisine. Try kapama, a slow-cooked meat and spice dish, accompanied by a good local wine.
Don’t forget to visit the Kordopulov House, a historic mansion with a huge wine cellar. Its architecture, frescoes, and underground tunnels make it a fascinating place to discover as a couple.
