Discover Doi Inthanon: The Magic of Thailand's "Roof"

Doi Inthanon

When you think of Thailand, you often imagine its beaches and temples. Or perhaps its elephants, elephants and spicy food. However, during my stay, I had the chance to discover another side of the country: its mountains. During my week of volunteering with elephants in the jungle, I visited Doi Inthanon National Park. I assure you, it wasn’t just a simple excursion; it was a true adventure! Picture yourself in the back of a truck, traveling through breathtaking landscapes, wind in your hair, with a smile you can't shake off. That day remains one of the most memorable experiences of my time in Thailand.

Where is Doi Inthanon National Park?

Doi Inthanon is one of the most impressive national parks in Thailand. Located in the north, about 100 km from Chiang MaiChiang Mai, it is known for being home to Thailand’s highest point. With an altitude of 2,565 meters, Doi Inthanon is often called the "Roof of Thailand." This mountainous region is part of the Himalayan mountain range, which adds a unique charm to this destination. For those who love combining hiking, cultural discoveries, and nature, Doi Inthanon is the perfect spot.

How to Access Doi Inthanon?

When I planned my trip to Thailand,I had already decided to visit Doi Inthanon. But I wasn’t sure how to go about it. Luckily for me, during my time in the jungle, our guide Joke arranged it all for us. But don’t worry—if you don’t have someone organizing it for you, you can get there on your own.

From Chiang Mai, several options are available to reach the park. The most convenient way is to rent a car or a scooter if you’re comfortable driving in Thailand. The park is about 110 km from Chiang Mai. Since it’s a mountainous road, the trip can take 2 hours or more, depending on how fast you're willing to drive.

As for me, I don’t like driving, especially not in Thailand. So, if you're like me and prefer not to drive or risk your life renting a scooter, opt for an organized tour. Dozens of tours depart daily from Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai , allowing you to visit the park. You can book in advance or just a day ahead—there are always options available.

Getting Around the Park and Practical Information

Doi Inthanon is an enormous park. Once you’re there, you’ll need transportation to explore the different attractions. A scooter or rental car is the best option. There are also shuttles, but you’ll need to be prepared for waiting and sharing the ride with other tourists. If you choose to drive, make sure to stop at the many viewpoints along the roads.

The park entrance fee is 300 THB for foreigners, plus an additional 30 THB if you have a vehicle. The park is open year-round, but the best time to visit is between November and February, when the weather is cooler, and the waterfalls are at their fullest.

During my visit, we used the shuttle to get between viewpoints. It was an original experience that I really enjoyed. So, go for it. Even if it’s not the height of luxury, the ride is part of the Doi Inthanon experience.

Must-Do Activities in Doi Inthanon

When you think of Doi Inthanon, you immediately imagine all the activities it offers. There’s so much to do that the hardest part is deciding where to start! For me, we began with the famous summit, the "Roof of Thailand." But, a little disappointment here... We drove up, which wasn’t what I had imagined. I love hikes where every step counts, where effort merges with discovery. Here, it was too quick. I didn’t get that gradual ascent through the landscapes, that connection with the mountain. But still, once at the top, it’s pretty impressive to be standing at the highest point in a country.

The park offers many other activities for nature and history lovers. If you visit in just one day, you might not have time to do everything. But here are some must-sees.

Hikes and Trails

Doi Inthanon offers several hiking trails suitable for all levels. Among the most popular is the Kew Mae Pan trail, which provides breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. There’s also the Ang Ka Nature Trail, an easier, more accessible path that takes you through a mystical forest.

During my visit, we did the Kew Mae Pan trail. Here, it’s almost mandatory to have a guide. On paper, that makes sense, but honestly, the trail is so well-marked that you could easily navigate it on your own. However, having a guide has some advantages. Not only do you contribute to the local economy, but you also respect the environment better. It allows you to follow the rules while supporting the community. And even though you may not need the guide to find your way, it adds a bit of a "group adventure" feel, which is rather nice.

Waterfalls

Doi Inthanon is famous for its numerous waterfalls. Mae Ya, Mae Klang, and Wachirathan are the most popular. They are all accessible by car, with short hikes to reach them. The waterfalls are spectacular during the rainy season but remain pleasant to visit year-round.

Royal Pagodas

Another iconic site in the park is the twin pagodas, built in honor of King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit. These pagodas stand proudly on the hills, offering an exceptional panoramic view. The gardens surrounding the pagodas are also a pure delight for the eyes.

Their architecture is magnificent, with bright colors and intricate sculptures. Each pagoda is surrounded by beautifully maintained gardens, filled with flowers. It’s the perfect place to take a break, stroll around, and admire the view. In short, an unmissable visit for its mix of history and visual beauty.

The Summit of Doi Inthanon

It would be a shame to visit the park without climbing to the summit of Thailand's "Roof." Although the hike to the top isn’t too challenging, you can also drive directly to the stele marking the highest point. Up there, you can enjoy the cool altitude and explore the sanctuary of King Inthawichayanon, a former king of Lanna.

Legends of Doi Inthanon

The park is also rich in history and legends. One of the most famous is the legend of King Inthawichayanon, one of the last kings of the Lanna kingdom. A lover of nature, he wanted to preserve this mountainous region for future generations. Before his death, he asked for his ashes to be buried at the summit of Doi Inthanon. Today, the mountain bears his name in tribute.

Another legend tells of giants who once inhabited the region, shaping the mountains and valleys we see today. These stories add a mystical touch to a place already filled with beauty and spirituality.

Practical Tips for Visiting Doi Inthanon

Before setting out on your Doi Inthanon adventure, it’s best to be well-prepared. Here are a few practical tips to avoid unpleasant surprises:

  • Be prepared for temperature changes: it can be very hot at the base, but the summit is often cool or even cold. Bring a jacket!
  • Pay attention to your clothing if you plan to enter the pagodas.
  • Bring enough water and snacks. Restaurants are mainly located at the park entrance.
  • Don’t rush. Doi Inthanon is vast, and it’s better to spend a full day to truly enjoy it.
  • Respect nature. The park is home to precious wildlife and flora, so leave it as clean as you found it.

Visiting Doi Inthanon is a unique experience. Add to that the fascinating legends and the warm welcome of the locals, and you get a must-see destination for nature and culture lovers alike.

For me, visiting Doi Inthanon was one of the highlights of my volunteering week in Thailand. The ride in the back of the truck, the laughter with my travel companions, and the incredible views are memories I’ll cherish for a long time.
