The origin of the Craft Beer Festival Strasbourg
The Strasbourg Craft Beer Festival is organized by the association Esprit Craft, born from a shared passion for craft beer. The desire to bring together craft beer enthusiasts in a city that already appreciates a good drink was the driving force behind its creation. Strasbourg is already known for its Christmas markets and local breweries, so it was only a matter of time before a festival dedicated to craft beer emerged. Every year, brewers from all over France, and even abroad, come to showcase their unique creations. Believe me, there’s something for everyone.
The first edition of the festival took place in 2018, and it has grown ever since, attracting more brewers, volunteers, and beer lovers. Personally, I discovered the festival in 2021. I went a bit “by chance” because it was happening in my neighbourhood. It was a remarkable evening. Here’s why I go back every year and never regret it.
Where and when does the festival take place?
The festival typically takes place at the end of summer, in a symbolic location in Strasbourg. If you've already visited the city, you know how well it can create a cozy atmosphere. Now, imagine a space where dozens of breweries set up their stands, ready to introduce you to their best creations. It happens in large halls where the smell of hops lingers in the air, and music accompanies you during your tastings. A true sensory delight!
Since 2021, the festival has been held at the Marcel Marceau Cultural Center in Neudorf. It’s a cultural center that hosts private events, concerts, festivals, and more. For the Strasbourg Craft Beer Festival, brewers occupy the large hall, the central lobby, and the outdoor garden. There’s plenty of space to stay inside or enjoy the nice weather outside.
What do you do at the Craft Beer Festival Strasbourg?
The first and most important activity: tasting. The festival is an invitation to sample a wide selection of craft beers, from light blondes to robust dark beers, including IPAs, stouts, and even beers with surprising flavors (one year, I tried a lavender beer—yes, it was bold).
But that’s not all! Workshops are also offered to learn more about the art of brewing. If you’re a bit of a beer geek, these sessions are an opportunity to dive deeper into yeast types, brewing methods, and the importance of local ingredients.
Numerous associations are also present to raise awareness about various causes such as alcohol abuse, domestic violence, sexism, and more. I encourage you to visit them and chat with the volunteers to learn more about these topics. You can also take a breathalyser test at any time during the evening.
The beers of the Craft Beer Festival Strasbourg
The Strasbourg Craft Beer Festival is a paradise for craft beer lovers. Every year, the event brings together an impressive number of local, national, and international brewers eager to share their creations. Among the must-try breweries are well-known Strasbourg names like Les Intenables, Roue Libre, Mogwai, Bendorf, and Grillen. These passionate artisans never fail to surprise with unique flavors. And believe me, they know their craft!
Internationally, we’re spoiled as well. You can toast with Swiss brewers like Drunk Beard Brewing, Germans from Schwarze Rose, or even Czechs from Zichovec Brewery, all of whom bring their personal touch to the event. From France, breweries like 3ienchs, 90 BPM, and AEROFAB delight us with beers that are as innovative as they are delicious. With such diversity, it’s impossible to get bored.
And then, there are the truly original beers. Last year, I had the chance (or bravery?) to taste a beetroot beer. Yes, you heard that right—beetroot! The mix is surprising at first, but you get used to it, and honestly, it works. At the Craft Beer Festival, you discover beers you’d never find anywhere else.
And what about the food?
Ah, the food! Because you can’t drink all those great beers without having something to snack on. The Craft Beer Festival has thought of everything. There are street food stalls offering dishes perfectly paired with your drinks—juicy burgers, crispy fries, soft pretzels… You definitely won’t leave with an empty stomach.
The Craft Beer Festival isn’t just about drinking beer (though let’s be honest, it’s a pretty good reason to go). It’s also a place for meeting and exchanging ideas. The brewers, often passionate and proud of their creations, are there to share their craft. You’ll learn all about the brewing process, the ingredients used, and even the little secrets that make some beers so special. Plus, it’s an opportunity to meet people who, like you, appreciate the good things in life. We chat, laugh, eat, toast… In short, it’s pure conviviality.
The festival-goer’s guide
To make the most of the festival, here are a few tips:
- Arrive early: The earlier you arrive, the fewer crowds there will be, and the more you can chat with the brewers and taste in peace.
- Don’t come on an empty stomach: While the food on-site is delicious, it’s always wise to have a snack before you arrive.
- Stay hydrated: Yes, beer is cool, but make sure to drink water between tastings. You’ll thank me later.
- Plan for a taxi or tram ride home: It’s always better to avoid driving after a day of beer tasting.
- Buy your ticket in advance: While you might be able to purchase a ticket at the door, buying in advance ensures your entry and saves you from waiting in line.
