Bran Castle: An Immersion into the Legend of Dracula
What do we really know about Romania? We often think of the stunning landscapes of the Carpathians, its medieval towns like Sibiu or Brasov, or perhaps its hidden thermal springs. But there’s another topic that always comes up: vampires. Yes, as soon as Romania is mentioned, it’s impossible to avoid talking about Dracula. Even though it makes some Romanians cringe (after all, their country is more than just a vampire in a black cape), this legend remains tied to the country's image. So, visiting Romania without stopping by the famous Dracula’s Castle? Unthinkable. Bran Castle (its official name), closely linked to the Dracula myth, attracts thousands of visitors from around the world each year.

But what’s a visit to this history- and legend-laden castle really worth? When is the best time to go, and how can you avoid tourist traps? Let’s uncover the mysteries of Bran Castle together.
Where is Bran Castle located?
Bran Castle is situated in the Transylvania region, in central Romania, about 30 km from the city of Brașov. Perched on a hill, it overlooks the surrounding valley and offers a spectacular view of the mountains, Which ones? The Carpathian.
The castle has a strategic position, located on the border between Transylvania and Wallachia. This location allowed it to play a crucial role in the region’s history, particularly as a defence point against invasions. But what draws visitors the most today is its link to the legendary Dracula.
How to get to Bran Castle?
Bran Castle is easily accessible from Brașov, the nearest large city. There are several ways to get there, whether by car, bus, or organized tour.
By car:
If you’ve rented a car, the route is quite straightforward. From Brașov, it takes about 40 minutes to reach Bran. Follow the well-marked DN73 national road. The drive takes you through beautiful mountain and forest landscapes, setting the mood right away.
By bus:
If you don’t have a car, the bus is an affordable option. Regular buses depart from the Autogara 2 bus station in Brașov. The journey takes about an hour, dropping you off just a few minutes’ walk from the castle. Schedules are available online. I recommend arriving early to catch your bus. The ride is also a golden opportunity to experience Romanian culture and off-the-beaten-path life. When I visited the castle in August 2024, we took the bus. My friend Ana, whom I often mention, was our guide and translator (though generally, people in Brașov speak English, especially in tourist spots). On both the outward and return trips, we met all kinds of “characters.” It was a fascinating experience that I highly recommend.
Organized tours:
Many travel agencies offer day trips from Brașov. This is a convenient option if you want to combine your visit to Bran Castle with other local attractions like Peleș Castle or the medieval town of Sighișoara. Prices vary by agency, so do some research before booking.
The history of Bran Castle
The history of Bran Castle is as fascinating as it is mysterious, marked by centuries of battles and legends. Now globally known as “Dracula’s Castle,” Bran didn’t always carry this label. Its past, though sometimes dark, primarily tells the story of Transylvania and Romania.
The beginnings of the Bran fortress
Bran Castle, as we know it today, was built in 1377. Initially, it was a fortress meant to defend the region against invaders. At the time, conflicts between neighboring kingdoms were frequent, and the fortress held significant strategic importance.Positioned on the border between Transylvania and Wallachia, Bran monitored passages and protected trade routes linking Eastern and Western Europe.
Before that, wooden structures dating back to the 13th century likely existed on the site. Unfortunately, these early fortifications were destroyed during various attacks. Only with permission from Louis I of Hungary did the stone fortress come into existence.
A military but also economic castle
The castle was primarily built to bolster defense against the Ottomans and other military powers frequently invading the region. Since it lay on a crucial trade route, it also served as a customs post where merchants paid tolls to pass.
This role made it an economic hub. Revenue from customs duties funded maintenance and improvements. Over the centuries, the castle housed not just soldiers but also officials and even royal families traveling through Transylvania.
Vlad the Impaler: the connection with Dracula
Of course, no history of Bran Castle would be complete without mentioning its tenuous connection to Vlad the Impaler, also known as Vlad III or Vlad Dracul. Vlad is often associated with Bran, not because he lived there, but because the fortress is near Wallachia, his homeland.
Vlad the Impaler was a 15th-century voivode of Wallachia known for his cruelty and particularly gruesome torture methods, including impalement. Legend says he was briefly imprisoned at Bran Castle, though no solid evidence supports this claim. Nevertheless, the rumor has fueled speculation, linking Bran to the Dracula myth popularized by Bram Stoker’s novel.
Interestingly, Stoker never visited Romania. Yet in his book, Dracula’s Castle is vividly described and closely resembles Bran Castle with its towers perched on a rocky hill. So, even if Vlad never set foot in Bran, the castle has become Dracula’s Castle in the collective imagination.
Best Time to Visit Bran Castle
Bran Castle attracts a large number of tourists, especially during the summer months. If you want to avoid the crowds and enjoy a more pleasant visit, it’s recommended to come early in the morning, right when the doors open.
The castle usually opens at 9:00 AM (except on Mondays when it opens at 12:00 PM), and early visitors often have the advantage of exploring the site peacefully before tour groups start arriving. You’ll also get to enjoy the soft morning light, which is perfect for photography. Personally, I was lucky to visit the castle early. We arrived at 8:45 AM, and I was literally the first person to enter the castle. By the time we finished the tour, we saw the crowd waiting to enter at 11:00 AM. I was thrilled with my choice to wake up early.
During holidays like Halloween, the castle hosts special events themed around Dracula. These can be fun experiences, but expect large crowds.
How to Buy Tickets for Bran Castle
There are several platforms where you can purchase tickets for Bran Castle, but be careful—prices vary. To avoid unpleasant surprises, it’s best to go through official platforms. On the castle’s website, you’ll find the exact prices and the option to purchase tickets online.
The standard fee for a classic visit to the castle is around 70 lei (approximately 16 euros). However, if you want a guided tour or access to specific areas, such as the torture chamber, additional fees apply.
Extras You Can Pay For
In addition to the standard entrance ticket, you can add a few extras to enhance your visit and make it more immersive. These include a guided tour and access to the torture chamber.
Guided Tour of Bran Castle
A guided tour is an excellent way to better understand the history of the castle and its legends. The local guides are well-versed in both the history of Bran and the myths surrounding it. For a modest fee (usually around 50 lei), you can enjoy fascinating anecdotes and information not found on the explanatory panels.
The Torture Chamber
For thrill-seekers, access to the torture chamber is a must. For a small additional fee, you can explore this eerie room, which features medieval torture instruments. It’s not for the faint-hearted but adds a darker twist to your visit.
The Time Tower: A New Feature at Bran Castle
The “Time Tower” at Bran Castle—a name that suggests mysteries or deep revelations about the past... Well, prepare for a small (or in my case, big) disappointment. If you’re expecting strange mechanisms or a portal to another era, think again! In reality, the tower is not particularly remarkable. You take an elevator down and walk through a corridor. The entire experience lasts a maximum of 10 minutes. It’s up to you to decide if it’s worth it. Personally, my favorite part was the descent in the elevator at the start. The rest was fairly underwhelming.
