A bit of history

The archipelago is marked by strong colonial influences and struggles for independence. Discovered by Arab and Portuguese navigators in the 16th century, the islands remained uninhabited until the French arrived in 1756, naming them in honor of Jean Moreau de Séchelles, Louis XV’s Minister of Finance. The French introduced coconut, cotton, and sugarcane cultivation, primarily worked on plantations. During this colonial period, the Seychelles became a strategic outpost for France in the Indian Ocean.

The Seychelles came under British control in 1814, following the Napoleonic Wars and the signing of the Treaty of Paris. They then became a Crown colony, maintaining the economic systems inherited from the French until 1976, when they gained independence. Since then, they have evolved into a stable republic, known for their exceptional biodiversity and an economy primarily based on tourism and fishing. While Creole is the traditional language, everyone speaks fluent English, which is also the working and administrative language, with French also in use.

Geography and Features of the Seychelles

The Seychelles are located about 1,600 kilometres off the coast of East Africa, north-east of Madagascar. The archipelago is divided into two categories of islands: granitic islands, usually larger and mountainous like Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue, and coral islands, which are smaller and often flat, like Denis Island and Bird Island. The granitic islands host the majority of the population and most of the tourist infrastructure.

Mahé: The Heart of the Seychelles

Mahé, the main and largest island in the archipelago, is the starting point for most travelers. With its capital, Victoria—one of the smallest capitals in the world—Mahé offers a unique blend of mountainous landscapes, tropical forests, and white sandy beaches. For hiking enthusiasts, climbing Morne Seychellois (905 meters), the island’s highest peak, is a must. This trail will offer you breathtaking views of the island and the surrounding ocean. Here are a few ideas for visits to North Mahé and Victoria:

  • Victoria: Stroll through the charming streets of this small town and visit the colorful Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market to discover local products, exotic fruits, fresh fish, and Seychellois crafts.
  • Beau Vallon Beach: One of the island’s most popular beaches, ideal for relaxing, swimming, or practicing water sports. The sunsets here are spectacular.
  • Victoria Botanical Garden: For nature lovers, this garden is a treasure with native plants, including the famous sea coconut (coco de mer) and giant tortoises.

Praslin: A Pristine Garden of Eden

Praslin, the second-largest island in the Seychelles, is known for its paradisiacal beaches and exceptional nature reserves. It is home to the famous UNESCO-listed Vallée de Mai, where the iconic sea coconut grows. The island has a more laid-back vibe than Mahé, perfect for those seeking peace and nature. On Praslin, don’t miss:

  • Vallée de Mai: Explore this prehistoric forest where the mysterious sea coconut grows wild. It’s a fascinating spot for botanical and wildlife enthusiasts, home to many rare bird species.
  • Anse Lazio: Considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, Anse Lazio is an idyllic beach with crystal-clear waters, surrounded by palm trees and granite formations. A perfect spot for swimming and snorkelling.
La Digue

La Digue: Authentic and Timeless Charm

La Digue, the fourth-largest island in the Seychelles, is renowned for its peaceful and authentic atmosphere. Time seems to stand still here, and people primarily get around by bike or on foot. La Digue is the perfect place to immerse yourself in local culture and discover postcard-perfect landscapes. Among the must-sees:

  • Anse Source d’Argent: Perhaps the most photographed beach in the world, Anse Source d’Argent is famous for its massive granite rocks, fine sand, and shallow, bright blue waters. It’s the perfect spot for a day of relaxation and swimming in a dream setting.
  • Union Estate Park: This park features a coconut plantation, a vanilla plantation, and a beautiful collection of giant tortoises. It offers a great glimpse into the agricultural history of the Seychelles.
  • Hike to Nid d’Aigle: For the more athletic, a hike to the top of Nid d’Aigle, La Digue’s highest point, provides impressive views of the island and the surrounding ocean.

The Exotic Islands: Unforgettable Getaways

Besides the main islands, the Seychelles offer a multitude of smaller, exclusive islands. Perfect for those seeking ultra-private escapes.

  • Denis Island : This private island, about a 30-minute flight from Mahé, is a true sanctuary for wildlife and nature. With only a few luxurious villas and no Wi-Fi or television, it’s the perfect place to disconnect and recharge in nature.
  • North Island : Known for hosting the biggest celebrities, North Island is an ultra-luxurious island with only 11 villas. Everything here is tailored to offer a unique experience in perfect harmony with the environment.
  • Bird Island : One of my favourite islands! Ideal for wildlife lovers, Bird Island is a true haven of peace. This ecological paradise is famous for its massive population of seabirds, particularly terns, and its giant tortoises. It’s the perfect spot for nature observation.

Practical Tips for Enjoying the Seychelles

  • Best time to visit: The Seychelles enjoy a tropical climate year-round. The months of April, May, October, and November are particularly pleasant, with moderate temperatures and calm seas, ideal for diving and snorkeling.
  • Transportation: To get between the islands, regular ferries connect Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue. For more remote islands, charter flights or helicopter transfers are often necessary. On each island, you can use public transport, rent a car easily, or use taxis.
  • Accommodation: The Seychelles offer a wide variety of accommodations, from luxurious five-star resorts to charming guesthouses. Luxury hotels, often located on private beaches or exclusive islands, offer villas with pools and top-notch services, ranging from €500 to €3,000 per night. For more modest budgets, guesthouses and small hotels are available from €70 to €150 per night, providing warm hospitality and often an immersion in local culture. Adventurous travellers can also opt for eco-lodges or bungalows in nature, with prices ranging between €150 and €400, depending on the services and location.
  • Budget : Plan for about €1,800 per person for a 10-day trip to the Seychelles (excluding international flights) for a combined stay on the three main islands, including transfers and excursions, staying in guesthouses or small boutique hotels with half-board.
  • Environmental protection: The Seychelles are pioneers in conservation. Respect local regulations on wildlife and flora protection. For example, do not touch the coral and avoid disturbing nesting turtles.
