It doesn\u2019t seek to impress. It lets you discover it. And in the end, it lingers in your mind. The Maritsa River flows through it. The city is quite well located. It\u2019s 145 km from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiscoverytravel.com\/en\/2024\/03\/06\/visiter-sofia-bulgarie\/\">Sofia<\/a>, 90 km de Stara Zagora, et \u00e0 deux pas des<a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiscoverytravel.com\/en\/2024\/03\/14\/montagnes-bulgarie\/\"> mountains,<\/a> , 90 km from Stara Zagora, and just steps away from the Rhodope Mountains. It\u2019s a good starting point for exploring the south of the country.<\/p><p>What\u2019s surprising is that it feels both urban and peaceful. Plovdiv never feels rushed. It takes its time. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiscoverytravel.com\/en\/2024\/04\/26\/survivre-un-long-trajet-des-astuces-pour-un-voyage-confortable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">journey<\/a> takes between 2.5 and 3 hours. It\u2019s not the fastest, but it\u2019s pleasant. Tickets cost a few euros.<\/p><p>There are also very frequent buses. They leave from the central bus station (avtogara Yug). The trip takes about two hours. It\u2019s often a bit more comfortable than the train. The road is good and well marked. Plus, it allows you to explore the surroundings.<\/p><p>Finally, Plovdiv has a small airport. It serves a few European destinations, mainly in summer. But it remains secondary. There are festivals, concerts, and street parties. If you tolerate heat well, it\u2019s a good time.<\/p><p>Autumn is probably the best season. Temperatures are more pleasant, the colors are beautiful. And there are fewer tourists. Winter is quiet. It\u2019s cold, but rarely freezing. You\u2019ll have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiscoverytravel.com\/en\/2024\/08\/29\/nessebar-un-tresor-unesco-au-coeur-de-la-bulgarie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the city<\/a> to yourself. It\u2019s one of the oldest cities in Europe. It has been continuously inhabited for over 8000 years.<\/p><p>As early as the Neolithic period, the first communities lived here. The Thracians founded the first urban center. Then came the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiscoverytravel.com\/en\/mes-services-organisation-voyage-sur-mesure\/travel-planner-balkans\/macedoine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Macedonians,<\/a>with Philip II, the father of Alexander the Great. He gave the city the name Philippopolis.<\/p><p>Later, the Romans left a strong mark. The amphitheatre, aqueduct, mosaics\u2026 all date from that period. During the Byzantine era, Plovdiv remained an important city but suffered many invasions. Slavs, Bulgarians, Ottomans\u2026 each brought their culture. Under the Ottoman Empire, the city became an administrative center. Churches and mosques coexisted.<\/p><p>In the 19th century, Plovdiv played a key role in the Bulgarian National Revival. The economy, education, and arts flourished. After liberation in 1878, it briefly became the capital of the autonomous province of Eastern Rumelia.<\/p><p>Today, this rich history is visible everywhere. In the architecture, the museums, or street names. Plovdiv is not a frozen museum. The streets are narrow, colorful, lined with small shops, caf\u00e9s, wine bars, and galleries. The vibe is young, relaxed, a bit bohemian. You hear music, see street art, meet students, tourists, families. It\u2019s the perfect place to grab a coffee, hang out, or buy an original souvenir. Every evening in summer, a sound and light show brings the central fountain to life, drawing families and curious onlookers. The park is also a meeting spot for locals. You\u2019ll see retirees playing chess, couples walking hand in hand, or children running around. You can see the whole city, the other hills, the plain in the distance. There are some ruins, fortification walls, foundations. But the main draw is the atmosphere. Many locals come here to sit, chat, watch the sunset. It\u2019s one of the oldest and most beautiful in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiscoverytravel.com\/en\/2024\/10\/18\/bulgarie-quels-sont-les-secrets-caches-du-monastere-de-rila\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bulgaria<\/a>Nestled in a green valley surrounded by mountains, it was founded in 1083 and combines Byzantine and Bulgarian influences. The frescoes in the main church are stunning. The atmosphere is peaceful, perfect for reflection. You can take a short hike in the nearby forest to reach a waterfall. If you like trains, take the narrow-gauge train that passes through Velingrad, Avramovo, Dobrinishte.
