However, during my stay, I had the chance to discover another side of the country: its mountains. During my week of volunteering with elephants in the jungle, I visited Doi Inthanon National Park. I assure you, it wasn\u2019t just a simple excursion; it was a true adventure! Picture yourself in the back of a truck, traveling through breathtaking landscapes, wind in your hair, with a smile you can't shake off. Located in the north, about 100 km from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiscoverytravel.com\/en\/2024\/02\/15\/chiang-mai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chiang Mai<\/a>Chiang Mai, it is known for being home to Thailand\u2019s highest point. With an altitude of 2,565 meters, Doi Inthanon is often called the \"Roof of Thailand.\" This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiscoverytravel.com\/en\/2024\/03\/14\/montagnes-bulgarie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mountainous region<\/a> is part of the Himalayan mountain range, which adds a unique charm to this destination. But I wasn\u2019t sure how to go about it. Luckily for me, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiscoverytravel.com\/en\/2024\/01\/31\/journey-to-freedom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">during my time in the jungle,<\/a> our guide Joke arranged it all for us. But don\u2019t worry\u2014if you don\u2019t have someone organizing it for you, you can get there on your own.<\/p><p>From Chiang Mai, several options are available to reach the park. The most convenient way is to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiscoverytravel.com\/en\/2024\/05\/03\/transports-et-deplacements-en-bulgarie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> rent a car<\/a> or a scooter if you\u2019re comfortable driving in Thailand. The park is about 110 km from Chiang Mai. Since it\u2019s a mountainous road, the trip can take 2 hours or more, depending on how fast you're willing to drive.<\/p><p>As for me, I don\u2019t like driving, especially not in Thailand. So, if you're like me and prefer not to drive or risk your life renting a scooter, opt for an organized tour. Dozens of tours depart daily from Chiang Mai or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiscoverytravel.com\/en\/2024\/02\/24\/chiang-rai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chiang Rai<\/a> , allowing you to visit the park. Once you\u2019re there, you\u2019ll need transportation to explore the different attractions. A scooter or rental car is the best option. There are also shuttles, but you\u2019ll need to be prepared for waiting and sharing the ride with other tourists. If you choose to drive, make sure to stop at the many viewpoints along the roads.<\/p><p>The park entrance fee is 300 THB for foreigners, plus an additional 30 THB if you have a vehicle. The park is open year-round, but the best time to visit is between November and February, when the weather is cooler, and the waterfalls are at their fullest.<\/p><p>During my visit, we used the shuttle to get between viewpoints. It was an original experience that I really enjoyed. So, go for it. Even if it\u2019s not the height of luxury, the ride is part of the Doi Inthanon experience.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-21dfdda elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"21dfdda\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Must-Do Activities in Doi Inthanon<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3ac02dc elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3ac02dc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>When you think of Doi Inthanon, you immediately imagine all the activities it offers. There\u2019s so much to do that the hardest part is deciding where to start! For me, we began with the famous summit, the \"Roof of Thailand.\" But, a little disappointment here... We drove up, which wasn\u2019t what I had imagined. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiscoverytravel.com\/en\/2024\/09\/27\/pyramides-de-stob-en-bulgarie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I love hikes where every step counts,<\/a>where effort merges with discovery. Here, it was too quick. I didn\u2019t get that gradual ascent through the landscapes, that connection with the mountain. But still, once at the top, it\u2019s pretty impressive to be standing at the highest point in a country.<\/p><p>The park offers many other activities for nature and history lovers. If you visit in just one day, you might not have time to do everything. Here, it\u2019s almost mandatory to have a guide. On paper, that makes sense, but honestly, the trail is so well-marked that you could easily navigate it on your own. However, having a guide has some advantages. Add to that the fascinating legends and the warm welcome of the locals, and you get a must-see destination for nature and culture lovers alike.<\/p><p>For me, visiting Doi Inthanon was one of the highlights of my volunteering week in Thailand. The ride in the back of the truck, the laughter with my travel companions, and the incredible views are memories I\u2019ll cherish for a long time. If you\u2019re passing through Chiang Mai, don\u2019t miss this hidden gem in Thailand\u2019s heights.
