My first week<\/a>of volunteered<\/a> in Thailand was an emotional and enriching experience, filled with meaningful encounters. Yet deep down, I felt a slight dissatisfaction, sensing the potential to do more. While the park<\/a> made a significant impact on the well-being of elephants and animals, I sometimes felt more like a tourist than a true contributor as a volunteer. That's why I decided to shift my perspective and explore other opportunities during my second week.<\/p><\/div>

I was fortunate. Before the week ended,<\/a>our guides told us about another project created by Lek: Journey to Freedom. This project<\/a> embodies an extraordinary initiative for the welfare of elephants who were previously exploited in industries like tourism and logging. Their history, often marked by years of forced labor, is taking a positive turn here.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The project focuses on rehabilitating elephants, removing them from restrictive environments and placing them in more natural, suitable surroundings. Journey to Freedom represents a crucial step in ensuring the respect and dignity of elephants, offering a new perspective on peaceful coexistence between these majestic animals and humans. This project transcends the usual bounds of volunteering, becoming a true mission of transformation. Finally, the elephants have the chance to live in complete freedom.<\/p>

Located about three hours from Chiang Mai, the seven elephants at Pati\u2019s (the man who welcomed us) have lived freely in the jungle for a few years. Previously, they were used in agriculture. Thanks to Lek and her foundation\u2019s help, they were reintegrated into their natural habitat. One baby elephant was even born\u2014the first in its family never to have suffered from the phajaan (a brutal training process).<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Volunteers play an essential role in supporting and improving the village's daily life. Their mission includes various tasks, such as maintaining the land, cutting grass for the elephants, and creating an environment conducive to their well-being. Besides these elephant-related duties, volunteers also contribute to the village's development, including teaching English at the local school, providing villagers with crucial language skills.<\/p>

Additionally, volunteers help promote this remote area, attracting attention and visitors. Their active involvement not only contributes to the community's vitality and prosperity but also allows Pati to avoid exploiting his elephants. This gives volunteers an unforgettable experience in the heart of the jungle.<\/p>

Volunteers' mission in this project surpasses the traditional volunteering. They become a way of change on different levels. THis allows Pati not to exploit his elephants. In total, nine of us volunteers decided to dedicate a week to Pati and his elephants. Our group was much smaller than at the park, which created a real closeness and allowed us to get to know each other better.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The Elephant Nature Park minibus picked us up in Chiang Mai at around 9 a.m., marking the start of our jungle adventure. The prospect of reuniting with my friends from the park filled me with excitement, even though we had just said goodbye the day before. Joke, our guide, informed us that the journey would take about three hours, with the last 30 minutes aboard a truck since the jungle trails were inaccessible by minibus.\u00a0<\/p>

I felt indifferent to these vehicle changes, but nothing had prepared me for the quality of these almost non-existent roads. I thought I was ready for anything, or at least that\u2019s what I believed. The winding paths mocked us, turning into real jungle-style roller coasters. I got into that truck convinced I was ready for adventure, but the bumps soon made me reconsider my certainties.<\/p>

Each jolt shook my convictions, and I quickly realized that my adventure would be marked by the tumult of unexplored paths. The jungle decided to make me dance to its uneven rhythm. Who would have thought I\u2019d sign up for a free rollercoaster ride in the middle of the jungle?<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The rough roads were soon forgotten once we arrived at Pati\u2019s. The setting was truly idyllic, and the contrast with Elephant Nature Park was striking. While the latter resembled a Club Med with elephants, at Pati\u2019s, we were truly immersed in nature. Dormitories housed four people, there were outdoor sanitation facilities, and a campfire at night kept us warm. I was in paradise. My love for unique settings and complete immersion in nature stems from a deep fascination with authenticity and simplicity.<\/p>

Being surrounded by the elements\u2014whether camping under the stars or in more rustic settings\u2014offers a unique experience. The raw beauty of the landscapes, the smell of a campfire, the freshness of the pure air\u2014all these create a valuable connection with the environment. These are the moments when I truly escape, far from the constraints of daily life, immersing myself in the simplicity and tranquility that nature offers. Every unique setting becomes a canvas, where memories are painted with the vivid colors of authenticity, creating memorable and enriching experiences.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Joke quickly unveiled the week's activity program. Like at the park, we had the privilege of enjoying three delicious meals prepared on-site. We also had the chance to organize a \"tourist\" outing, opting for a visit to Doi Inthanon,<\/a>Thailand's highest point, planned for our last day. However, the most eagerly awaited aspect was undoubtedly the special moments spent with the elephants\u2014I couldn't wait.<\/p>

On the first day, we ventured into the jungle for a short 40-minute hike, which brought us to the elephants. Pati's seven elephants roam freely in the jungle near his home. Although I\u2019d like to say they live in total freedom, unfortunately, that\u2019s not always the case. Sometimes they are tied up at night, especially if the mahouts can\u2019t keep them away from the village. This measure is taken to prevent potential dangers to the villagers and their homes due to the elephants' proximity.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Like at the park, the males and females are separated, but here, it\u2019s more of a natural choice. Once they reach a certain age, the males prefer to live in solitude. This is also a safety concern, as males pose a significant danger to tourists.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>

This is also true for females. We hiked through more or less passable jungle trails to reach the elephants. We were quickly made aware of one crucial point: never stand downhill from the elephants. Despite their size, they can run very fast\u2014a good thing to know.<\/p>

We spent two days in the jungle observing the elephants in their natural environment. The emotions I felt are hard to explain. The elephants in the jungle primarily feed on grass and leaves, and they can devour banana trees in minutes. A banana tree grows 3 meters tall in a year and is eaten by the elephant in five minutes flat. Because they feed exclusively on natural elements, the jungle elephants seemed \u201cthinner\u201d compared to those at the park. In reality, it\u2019s the park elephants who are overweight, as they are fed a diet of fruit and rice every day, which isn\u2019t their natural diet.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Our arrival at the village didn\u2019t go unnoticed. While the villagers were used to seeing volunteers at Pati\u2019s, their curiosity remained. We toured the village, mindful of our attire. Karen villages in Thailand offer a fascinating glimpse into the rich culture and traditional life of this ethnic group. Nestled in the northern mountains, these villages are often characterized by stilt houses surrounded by lush rice fields. The Karen, known for their skilled craftsmanship, produce colorful, intricately adorned textiles, reflecting the fine craftsmanship passed down through generations. The residents' warm hospitality allows visitors to immerse themselves in a preserved way of life and create authentic connections with this fascinating community.<\/p>

We had the opportunity to visit a school where we spent time teaching children aged 3 to 8. Our mission was to teach English in a fun way, teaching them songs and sharing creative activities. For two hours, we sang together, shared moments of laughter and excitement, and explored our creativity through drawing and games. The children\u2019s infectious enthusiasm made this educational experience not only enriching for them but also immensely rewarding for us as volunteers.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Whether it\u2019s an exciting adventure, an unforgettable experience, or a chapter of life, the concept of endings often brings complex emotions. However, it\u2019s in these moments that the beauty of the ephemeral lies, reminding us to cherish every moment and learn from every journey.<\/p>

On the last day in the village, the elephants came to visit us. Well, they were guided by the mahouts, but still, they were there. When they left, I cried. I knew it would be the last time I\u2019d see them, and it affected me deeply.<\/p>

Before we departed, Pati organized a blessing ceremony for us. According to Karen tradition, the young return home twice a year to receive the elder\u2019s blessing. That\u2019s what Pati did for us. Although I don\u2019t know the exact words he spoke, I\u2019ll remember his voice, his gaze, and his hands tying a bracelet around my wrist.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>

The week spent with Pati\u2019s elephants and the villagers passed quickly\u2014too quickly. Every day, we took part in different activities that made me forget my daily life in France. The memories of these shared moments with the elephants and my new travel friends will remain etched in my mind. Cutting rice in the rain, trudging through the mud, being jolted around for hours in the truck to cross the mountains\u2026 All these experiences have become unforgettable memories. When we share these strong emotions with others\u2014whether friends, family, or even strangers\u2014we create lasting bonds. <\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
