There are countless reasons to visit this country, and everyone has their own motivations. However, I strongly believe that even if you visit Scotland for its culture, history, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiscoverytravel.com\/en\/2024\/06\/12\/perth-pourquoi-cest-un-must-dans-votre-voyage-en-ecosse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cities<\/a> , and cuisine (yes, that's possible too), what will leave the most lasting impression on you are the Highlands. This wild and mysterious region in northern Scotland captivates visitors with its breathtaking scenery, rich history, and unique culture. A group of friends and I decided to visit C\u00e9line, a French expat in Glasgow. During that week-long trip, we tried to see as much as possible. Starting in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiscoverytravel.com\/en\/2024\/10\/04\/visiter-edimbourg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Edinburgh<\/strong><\/a>and passing through <strong>Glasgow<\/strong>,  we spent three days exploring <strong>the Isle of Arran.<\/strong>I don\u2019t remember everything from that trip, but I do recall a memorable hike that almost ended very badly.<\/p><p>We set out to explore the Highlands in the early afternoon on a rainy day, without supplies, a flashlight, or a map. I\u2019m not sure when we started to panic. We walked for hours, crossing hill after hill, hoping to find a familiar landmark to help us find our way. Fortunately, it all ended well. That was my first taste of the Highlands, and ever since, I\u2019ve been eager to return regularly.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element Highlands<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a0d7770 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a0d7770\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Highlands cover a vast area in the north of Scotland, characterized by rugged mountains, deep valleys, winding rivers, and peaceful lochs. Among the Highlands' notable peaks is <strong>Ben Nevis<\/strong>the highest mountain in the UK, standing at 1,345 meters. I had the chance to climb <strong>Ben Nevis<\/strong> in 2019. It was a memorable experience. Even though it\u2019s far from the highest peak I\u2019ve climbed, the hike was still challenging. Starting at the <strong>Glen Nevis Visitor Center<\/strong> at an altitude of 17m, you ascend to the summit at 1,345m over 7.92km. Not only is it a significant elevation gain, but you also have to prepare for a drastic temperature change from bottom to top. Don\u2019t forget your hats and gloves, even if you're hiking in the summer.<\/p><p>The lochs (lakes) are also iconic features of the Highlands. <strong>Loch Ness<\/strong>, famous for its legendary monster, is undoubtedly the most well-known. Stretching about 37 kilometers long, it is the second-largest loch in Scotland by surface area, but the largest by volume. <strong>Loch Lomond<\/strong>, located at the boundary of the Highlands and Lowlands, is the largest loch by surface area and offers numerous outdoor activities like kayaking, fishing, and hiking. Or, if you\u2019re as adventurous as I am, you can take a swim. But be warned, the water may be a bit chilly.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8c01c93 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"8c01c93\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">History and Legends<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f863ec8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f863ec8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Highlands have a rich and complex history, marked by clan wars, rebellions, and epic battles. From prehistoric times, the Highlands were inhabited by Celtic tribes who left their mark in the form of standing stones and cairns.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-62f7906 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"62f7906\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fb2627b e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"fb2627b\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3a1aaaa elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3a1aaaa\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>With the arrival of the Romans, the Highlands remained largely independent and untamed, beginning their reputation as a rebellious region.<\/p><p>The Middle Ages saw the rise of Scottish clans, tightly knit family groups that dominated the social and political life of the Highlands. Each clan had its own territory, often defended by a strong castle. Clan rivalries could be fierce, leading to bloody battles such as the Battle of <strong>Culloden<\/strong> Culloden in 1746. home to many historic castles that tell the region's fascinating stories. These castles, often perched on steep hills or located by shimmering lochs, offer a unique glimpse into Scottish history, from medieval battles to Jacobite rebellions. Located near <strong>Stonehaven,<\/strong>this ruined castle offers incredible panoramic views and a history filled with dramatic events. Known for having housed the Scottish Crown Jewels during <strong>Cromwell's invasion,<\/strong>Dunnottar is a must-see for history and scenery lovers.<\/p><p>If you visit the castle, cross your fingers for good weather. Your experience can really change depending on what nature throws at you. During my visit in 2024, the sun was shining, and the breeze was pleasant. I loved the climb down and up to the castle. This wasn't the case for my friend France, who faced a storm. Located on a steep cliff overlooking the sea, this castle offers spectacular views and a mysterious atmosphere. Its romantic ruins are accessible via a coastal path, and though little of the original structure remains, the wild beauty of the place makes it a memorable visit. If you visit during the summer, I recommend continuing to the nearby beach for a swim.
