At 18, I made the slightly crazy decision to leave<a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiscoverytravel.com\/en\/2024\/05\/14\/visiter-la-bulgarie-informations-pratiques-pour-organiser-son-voyage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Bulgaria,<\/a> and move to France. I didn't know anyone and didn\u2019t really speak French. However, sometimes impulsive decisions bring us a lot of happiness. That was the case for me. But I digress. I was lucky enough to have family in Belgium who hosted me for a few days before helping me move to Metz. That\u2019s how I discovered Antwerp for the first time, and it\u2019s how my journey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiscoverytravel.com\/en\/2024\/05\/10\/voyager-seul-les-10-peurs-qui-nous-bloquent-pour-partir-en-voyage-solo\/\">as a traveller<\/a> began.<\/p><p>To this day, I\u2019ve never felt such strong emotions when discovering a city. Maybe it was because it was the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiscoverytravel.com\/en\/mes-services-organisation-voyage-sur-mesure\/blog-travel-planner\/blog-de-voyage-par-categorie\/#blogville\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">city in Western Europe<\/a> that I explored. Or maybe it was because I was only 18 and still in shock from leaving my country. But I still believe it was mostly because Antwerp is truly an impressive city. elementor-size-default\">Where the Name Antwerpen Comes From<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-68c9463 elementor-widget class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>When you visit the city with locals, the first thing you\u2019ll hear is <strong>the legend<\/strong> behind the name of the city, Antwerpen. It\u2019s said that a wicked giant imposed a monstrous tax on the city's inhabitants. Those who refused to pay had their hands cut off. But fortunately for the people, a brave Roman soldier, Silvius Brabo, killed the giant, cut off his hand, and threw it into the river. The name comes from \u201cHand werpen\u201d (hand \u2013 \u201chand,\u201d werpen \u2013 \u201cto throw\u201d in Dutch).<\/p><p>The much less poetic version is that the name comes from \"aan het werpen,\" which means \u201cthe jetty of the port.\u201d Feel free to choose the version you like best. However, I should note that, to my knowledge, the locals prefer the first version. It started modestly as a small village around a Roman fortress, but over time, the city grew, and by the 16<sup>th<\/sup> century, it became one of Europe\u2019s most important ports. This period is often referred to as \u201cthe golden age of Antwerp.\u201d<\/p><p>It was a major center of commerce, finance, and art. The city attracted merchants, artists, and intellectuals from all over the world. However, its turbulent history also includes periods of war, economic decline, and rebuilding. Today, Antwerp is a dynamic city, renowned for its diamond trade, flourishing art scene, and beautiful architecture, while proudly preserving its historical I make this assumption because very few destinations are served by the Antwerp airport. On the other hand, it\u2019s very likely that you\u2019ll <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiscoverytravel.com\/en\/2024\/04\/26\/survivre-un-long-trajet-des-astuces-pour-un-voyage-confortable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arrive by train.<\/a>And thankfully so. One of the first places you should visit is <strong>the station itself.<\/strong>I know it\u2019s strange to say that about a train station, but Antwerp\u2019s is unlike any other.<\/p><p>Antwerp\u2019s station, also known as <strong>Central Station,<\/strong>is an architectural masterpiece. Built between 1895 and 1905, it\u2019s often called the \u201ccathedral of the railways.\u201d Its impressive facade and majestic hall immediately captivate visitors. I\u2019m against zoos and in favor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiscoverytravel.com\/en\/2024\/02\/06\/le-volontourisme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ethical tourism.<\/a>But even from the outside, the zoo is still a fine example of architecture. Founded in 1843, Antwerp Zoo is one of the oldest in the world. It\u2019s home to over 7,000 animals from 950 species.<\/p><p>The zoo is open every day from 10 AM to 6 PM. It\u2019s a statue of <strong>Nello and Patrasche,<\/strong>a boy and his dog\u2014two iconic characters from a popular tale. The story tells of Nello\u2019s difficult life as an orphan who dreams of seeing the artwork in the cathedral, but is denied entry. Every day, he waits outside with his loyal dog. A great example of its modern side is the <strong>Museum Aan de Stroom (MAS).<\/strong>Opened in 2011, the museum chronicles Antwerp\u2019s history as a port city. The modern architecture of the building contrasts with the historical collections it houses. Personally, what I find most impressive about this museum is the panoramic view from the roof.<\/p><p>The entrance fee is \u20ac10, <a href=\"https:\/\/mas.be\/en\/page\/how-when-get-here\"
